How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT

And by Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. Eight steps, in the order we work through them for clients. Each one can be checked; none of them needs a trick.

  1. Let the AI search crawlers in

Open your robots.txt (yourwebsite.com/robots.txt). The crawlers that fetch pages for answers are OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (OpenAI), PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User (Anthropic), and Googlebot and Bingbot, which feed Google’s AI Overviews, Gemini and several assistants. If any of them is blocked, you are out of those answers. Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or Google-Extended is a separate choice. Also check your firewall or CDN: bot protection sometimes blocks these crawlers without anything in robots.txt.

  2. Make your key pages readable without JavaScript

Many AI crawlers read the HTML and do not run scripts. If your homepage or service pages only fill in after JavaScript runs, they look empty. Test it: view the page source and check whether your main text is there.

  3. Describe your company in structured data

Add Organization or LocalBusiness markup in JSON-LD with your exact name, website, logo, address, phone and opening hours. List your official profiles in sameAs. This is how machines connect your site, your Google profile and your LinkedIn page to one company.

  4. Answer the questions buyers actually ask

Write down the twenty questions a buyer asks before choosing someone like you, in their words. Give each important one its own page or section, and answer it directly in the first two sentences, then explain. Engines quote passages that answer cleanly.

  5. Be the same everywhere

Use the same name, address, phone and description on Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, LinkedIn and the directories in your trade. Conflicting details make engines unsure which business is which, and unsure engines name someone else.

  6. Get mentioned where AI looks

AI engines cite third parties more than your own site: industry lists, comparison articles, trade press, associations and reviews. Find the sources the engines cite for your competitors and earn a place in them.

  7. Publish in your buyers’ languages

An international buyer asks in their own language, and the answer comes from sources in that language. Translate your key pages properly and link the versions with hreflang.

  8. Measure with fixed questions, several times

Answers vary between runs. Ask the same questions every month, word for word, three times in each engine, and keep the raw answers. Then you can see what changed and why.
